Cosplay Coop: Where Chickens and Cosplay Unite in the Most Adorable Way

Two people in blue costume sit on a wooden bench, holding a rooster. They are outdoors with greenery in the background, smiling.

When you think of cosplay, images of vibrant costumes, detailed props, and fan conventions likely come to mind. Right?

But.... what if we told you there was a place where cosplay meets chickens?

Welcome to Cosplay Coop, a sanctuary that blends the love of poultry with the creativity of cosplay in the most charming and unexpected way.

Founded nearly a decade ago by Rachel, Cosplay Coop began as a rescue effort when she and her partner saved a tiny chick and its mother from an animal attack. Though the mother tragically passed away, she had given everything to protect her one-legged chick. Unsure of what to do next, Rachel simply asked, "Well, can't we raise him?" And with that, an incredible journey began.

Now celebrating his tenth birthday, that very chick—Ludo—has grown into one of the most loving and gentle roosters in the sanctuary. Over the years, Ludo has helped care for and guide countless rescued hens and roosters. As he starts to slow down, his daughter, Cuddles, has begun stepping up in his place—though she seems to have an identity crisis and doesn’t quite believe she’s a chicken! She happily joins the morning rounds, offering her own brand of support to the flock.

Stylized roosters with vibrant red and blue feathers dominate the background. A real rooster with a red comb is in the foreground. Text reads "04".

Cosplay Coop isn’t just about rescue; it’s also about education. Rachel and her team offer free advice on poultry care, from health concerns to coop setups. They’ve taken their mission to schools, agricultural shows, and even comic conventions. That’s right—chickens are getting in on the cosplay fun! Their next stop? White Rock Hastings Comic Con.

Thanks to the collaboration with Heroes for Hire Princesses for Parties, a cosplay charity group based in East Sussex, Cosplay Coop’s feathered residents have become stars in their own right. The group creates custom costumes from animal-friendly fabrics, giving the chickens their own nerdy wardrobe. These feathered models have even graced the pages of Neo Magazine and appeared in numerous themed photo sessions.

One of the biggest hits at the coop? The infamous red dress. Chickens like MollyMo and Valmer compete for the chance to wear this fan-favorite outfit, strutting their stuff with undeniable flair. And let’s not forget Coco—an extraordinary chicken with both male and female characteristics due to early mishandling and steroid exposure. Despite facing numerous health challenges, Coco has become a loving and maternal figure to the smaller bantams, even if their enthusiastic greetings occasionally knock visitors off their feet!

Cosplay Coop helps fund its sanctuary through the sale of cosplay-themed chicken postcards and other nerdy poultry merchandise. Every purchase goes toward the care, medical expenses, and general well-being of their beloved flock. And while the main sanctuary in Bodiam, East Sussex, is not open to the public, visitors are welcome at their Staplecross location, where they can meet and cuddle some of the resident chickens.

Whether they’re posing with their favorite manga (Rooster Fighter and Honey Lemon Soda, of course), braving a Fullmetal Alchemist photo shoot in strong winds, or simply brightening lives with their unique blend of cosplay and compassion, these chickens are proving that fandom has no limits.
