A Summer Staple for Asian Pop Culture Fans

Otakon returned to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center this summer, filling downtown DC with a weekend-long celebration of Asian pop culture. From anime and manga to music, video games, and films, the event delivered non-stop energy for fans of all ages.

Even before doors opened, the lines stretched far down the street—and only grew longer as the day went on. Inside, every corner of the venue offered something new to explore, and the cosplay presence was massive.

A Vendor Hall Packed with Artists, Merch, and Guests

The vendor hall was a sea of anime, manga, gaming, and pop culture booths. Vendors offered everything from imported collectibles and rare art prints to apparel, plushies, and fan gear. A huge section was dedicated to artists from across the Asian pop culture community, giving attendees the chance to pick up unique, handcrafted items straight from the source.

While past years featured more elaborate, large-scale booth setups, this year’s vendor floor leaned into a more standard convention style—making it easy to navigate, but missing some of the immersive displays long-time attendees might remember.

Gaming Heaven Upstairs

On the top floor, Otakon transformed a massive space into a gaming paradise. Rows of PCs hosted competitive and casual computer gaming, while console stations brought fans together for everything from retro classics to the latest releases. Arcade cabinets and VR experiences rounded out the mix, and a sprawling board game area gave attendees a chance to slow down and connect over tabletop play.

The energy in the gaming hall was electric, with constant movement between matches, demos, and open play sessions.

Cosplay Photo Ops & Community Meet-Ups

Otakon 2025 also offered designated cosplay photo op spaces with themed backdrops, perfect for meetups and group shots. These areas made it easy for fandom groups to gather, pose, and capture the moment—while outside and throughout the venue, cosplayers filled every available space for impromptu shoots.

This year, one of the most noticeable trends was the huge presence of cosplays inspired by the recent hit movie Demon Hunter, with a dedicated booth featuring large photos from the movie, along with photos from other K-pop bands.

The Anime Car Show

One of the event’s most unique features was the anime-inspired car show. Located in the back area of the Gaming Hall, lined vehicles wrapped in vivid designs featuring characters from fan-favorite series, the display added a fresh twist to the con floor. Attendees stopped constantly for photos, and the creativity on display matched the energy of the cosplay community.

Cosplay Everywhere

From the moment you stepped inside—and even before—you were surrounded by cosplayers from every fandom imaginable. Whether it was anime, gaming, K-pop, or movie-inspired looks, the variety was incredible. The Demon Hunter cosplays were particularly prominent, but fans repped everything from classic series to niche favorites.

Final Thoughts

Otakon 2025 proved once again why it’s a summer must-attend for anime and Asian pop culture fans. While the vendor hall lacked some of the massive exhibition-style setups of the past, the energy, community presence, and diversity of activities made it a standout experience. Between the packed gaming floor, dedicated cosplay spaces, and one-of-a-kind anime car show, there was no shortage of reasons to stay from open to close all weekend long.

If you love anime, gaming, cosplay, or just being surrounded by passionate fans—Otakon is one to keep on your radar.
