How to Make Your Cosplay Costume Stand Out with Unique Fabric Choices

Being a cosplayer is a great opportunity to let the creative ideas flow. You don't have to follow the crowd to create a quality costumes either. It's actually better to do something different to help set yourself apart from everyone else. Now specifically, if you're a seamstress, there's some simple ways to make your cosplay look different. One such thing is simply your fabric selections. So learn how to make your cosplay costume stand out with unique fabric choices so you can set yourself apart from others.

How to Make Unique Fabric Selections

  • Patterned fabrics - There's fabrics out there with unique patterns than can help make your garments stand out. Consider your character when making this selection. If you're cosplaying a Tyrell from Game of Thrones, fabrics with additional floral patterns can help set you apart while still staying true to the character and their house.

  • Trims - Simply adding trims and lace to the edges of your fabric can make it stand out without having to make a fabric choice. You'll want to find something that pairs well with the fabric you're choosing, and similar with the patterned fabrics, something that fits the character.

  • Embroidered or beaded fabrics - You can find fabrics already embroidered or embroider and bead them yourself. Just like with patterned fabrics though, make sure the design is fitting to your character. You could for example add embroidery meant to look like moss for a Beetlejuice cosplay.

  • Mixing different types of fabrics - By mixing fabric types, you can create different textures and really elevate your cosplay. This can create a cool visual but make sure the fabrics you select fit to the character you're creating.

  • Complimentary liner fabrics - If your lining fabric is going to be visible to the public eye, pick something with a bit of flair. You want to ensure it works well with the main fabric and fits your character. But consider something with a pattern or a color that matches to the character's color scheme.

  • Different fabric types - For non- live action characters, you get more freedom with the type of fabrics you choose. So select something not everyone is doing. If most people picked a silk or satin for a dress, consider trying a velvet or other fabric type that fits the character and the garment you're creating.

Conclusion

Making your cosplays stand out is easy. You just have to think creatively. By making unique fabric selections, you can cosplay a character in a whole new way. Experiment with patterns, fabric types and embellishments to create something totally different from anything anyone has seen before.
