Battle worn costumes and props require weathering to enhance the realism. Different methods create different effects. So we're going to focus in on specific weathering techniques to add a particular gore effect. In this guide, we cover how to create realistic blood effects for cosplay props so you can make them look like they came right off the battlefield.
What is the Best Fake Blood for Props
Fake blood exists in abundance. There's different types to have a variety of appearances and even different applications such as clothing, props and skin. You can't treat all blood the same so you need to choose from the best fake blood for your props.

Perma Blood - This is a permanent blood paint that works perfect for props. It's great for realistic and durable effects since it dries to a flexible, glossy and waterproof finish so it still looks fresh and won't wash off.
Monster Maker's Polymer Blood - This is another permanent blood coating that's designed to dry looking fresh or even aged depending on the shade you get. It has a flexible, high gloss finish and is water proof.
Dirty Down Gore - Dirty Down Gore is great for adding stringy blood effects for your props.
Resin - Another permanent option that is a little more difficult to work with is epoxy resin. Dye it the right shade and you have a glossy, fresh blood effect.
How to Make SFX Blood
Since purchasing the right materials can sometimes be expensive, try making your own fake blood for props. Simply mix red food coloring or liquid dye with a clear glue. You can had hints of green to darken the color. Then it will harden and still look wet and fresh.
What Fake Blood Dries Looking Wet
Most stage bloods won't dry and look wet or maintain the right shade of red. This is because they are meant for temporary looks, not permanent props. The fake blood that best dries looking wet and the right color is Perma Blood. It's specifically designed to harden and last while still looking realistic and fresh.
How to Apply Fake Blood Realistically
Now that we have the right type of fake blood for props, we need to apply it. Just like with painting, the tools you use and how you use them is important to achieve the right look.
Tools
Paint brushes - A very basic tool for applying paints to props, choose from standard brushes or chip brushes to create different effects.
Sponge or stipple sponge - To blot, blob or texture your blood, use sponges. These can help add layers of realism as well.
Droppers or syringes - For droplets, apply the blood from a dropper or syringe.
Squeeze bottles - For larger drops of blood or applying large blobs and pooling, you can utilize a squeeze bottle.
Hands - For more natural hand prints and smears, don't be afraid to get your hands actually dirty to apply your fake blood.
How to Make Realistic Blood Splatters
Blood splatters can be achieved in a multitude of ways:
Small splatters - Use a small, stiff brush or toothbrush by dipping it into your fake blood. Then run your thumb over the bristles to flick the paint onto a desired area.
Large splatters - Dip a large brush or cloth and wave it at the desired area. These will create larger splatters but can also make quite a mess.
Conclusion
